Former Alabama Gov. George Wallace, a Democrat, is well known for one quote in particular – “Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.”
Apparently, the son of Martin Luther King, Jr. has decided to compare Wallace to President Trump.
From The Hill:
Martin Luther King Jr.’s eldest son on Monday compared President Trump to former Alabama Gov. George Wallace (D) amid backlash over Trump’s controversial “shithole countries” remark, The Associated Press reported.
“George Wallace was a staunch racist and we worked on his heart and ultimately George Wallace transformed,” Martin Luther King III said while speaking in Washington on the holiday named after his father.
“We got to find a way to work on this man’s heart,” he adding, referring to Trump.
More from Los Angeles Times:
King’s daughter, the Rev. Bernice King, keynote speaker at the Atlanta service, also criticized Trump. “We cannot allow the nations of the world to embrace the words that come from our president as a reflection of the true spirit of America,” she said.
“We are one people, one nation, one blood, one destiny. … All of civilization and humanity originated from the soils of Africa,” Bernice King said. “Our collective voice in this hour must always be louder than the one who sometimes does not reflect the legacy of my father.”
The day took on renewed meaning for descendants of black slaves owned by the Cherokee Nation but whose tribal citizenship was in flux until recently, despite a treaty guaranteeing rights equal to native Cherokees.
When has 45 ever shown himself to be racist? MLK III knows black unemployment is at its lowest point since 1972, right?
Even if Trump did refer to some nations as ‘s***holes’ – which is still foggy – he’s not exactly lying. Plenty of countries are entirely in disarray.
This whole ‘Trump is a racist’ narrative won’t sit well with voters in 2020. That much is certain.
