Secretary of Defense James “Mad Dog” Mattis is undoubtedly one of the best cabinet members brought onboard by President Trump.
He’s a strong leader who takes no guff.
Now, Mattis has just made a historic visit to Gitmo to meet with the troops before Christmas.
From Right Scoop:
General Mattis has made a historic trip to Guantanamo Bay today. It’s the first time the Secretary of Defense has visited the prison in 16 years.
From Sputnik International:
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – US Defense Secretary Mattis on Thursday made the first trip by a sitting Pentagon chief to the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba since 2002, US media reported.
Mattis visited the US base to offer holiday greetings to American troops stationed there and did not tour the notorious US detention facility, the Associated Press reported on Thursday.
Donald Rumsfeld was the last US defense secretary to visit Guantanamo in January 2002, just weeks after the arrival of the first prisoners.
Inaugurated by former President George W. Bush, the US detention center in Cuba housed nearly 800 prisoners detained in the wake of September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the United States.
The Hill has more:
The prison at Guantanamo has been used to hold suspected terrorists, and 41 detainees are currently held at the facility. Ten of those detainees have been charged by a military commission, according to the AP, and five have been cleared to leave.
The Trump administration has not released any detainees from the prison or cleared any others to leave.
Former President Barack Obama vowed to close the facility and transfer remaining detainees to the U.S. mainland, but was blocked by Congress. The Obama administration, though, sharply reduced the number of inmates from 242 to 41.
Unlike any SecDef who served under Obama, Mattis gets things done.
It’s all part of the MAGA agenda.
